STROKE ACROSS AMERICA

More than a bike ride—a 4,500 mile journey to raise awareness

Stroke

Aphasia

Emotional Recovery

A 100-day journey, 4,548 miles, 16 community events–and one powerful mission.

Stroke Across America was more than a bike ride. Organized by stroke survivor Debra Meyerson and her husband, Steve Zuckerman, this 2022 ocean-to-ocean journey brought national attention to the emotional side of stroke recovery—including the challenges of rebuilding identity and finding purpose after trauma. Over 100 days, Debra and Steve—joined by fellow survivors Whitney Hardy and Michael Obel-Omia, plus more than 100 riders along the way—rode from the Pacific to the Atlantic, hosting community events that amplified survivor stories and sparked critical conversations about stroke and aphasia.

The Ride at a Glance

100 Days Total – 80 Riding Days

The route prioritized safe, high-quality riding conditions and the ability to host community events. While many cross-country rides avoid major cities, ours intentionally included them to maximize visibility and impact.

4,548 Miles (~57.5 Miles per Riding Day)

Built around established bike routes, the journey spanned the country—from San Francisco to Boston—with riders navigating everything from mountain passes to urban streets.

~146,000 Feet of Elevation (~1,850 per Riding Day)

The physical challenge mirrored the emotional resilience required in stroke recovery. Each mile climbed was a testament to perseverance and adaptation.
